Our headquarter is located in the thriving commercial metropolis of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany, which also hosts one of our most famous facilities, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.
This project will focus on improving our understanding and protection of multispecies genetic diversity patterns through macrogenetic synthesis (see Leigh et al., 2021 NRG) and population genetic simulations.
Islands are nature’s natural laboratories and have long been used to fuel and test evolutionary thought. In this postdoctoral project you will synthesize population-level data from islands to characterize genetic diversity’s relationship with geological, climatic, and biotic variables. You will explore if relationships on islands are consistent or opposed to those found at a global scale, generating essential information for island nations interested in biodiversity protection and management. This information will parameterize realistic simulations that explore the broader impact of the severe genetic erosion occurring on islands (e.g. Leigh et al., 2019) to gain insight into system stability.
We seek a candidate interested in moving fluidly between big-picture questions and practical implementation. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine deep scientific curiosity with a motivation to translate ideas into real-world impact. You will work in the Genomic Biomonitoring Lab at Senckenberg (Prof. Dr. Deborah Leigh; Frankfurt, Germany) and have the chance to work within an established network of international collaborators, offering a great opportunity to grow as a scientist. The working language of the lab is English.
Your tasks
- Collate and enrich published nuclear genetic and genomic datasets in a macrogenetic database
- Conduct large-scale synthesis analyses
- Simulate realistic genetic data in SLiM
- Publish findings in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at international conferences
- Supervise MSc and/or BSc students and their thesis
Your profile
- PhD in Population Genomics, Bioinformatics, Macroecology, Digital twin development
- Good knowledge of fundamental population genetic theory and analyses
- Basic understanding of different molecular data types
- Experience working in a reproducible manner on remote computing clusters with large-scale biodiversity, macroecological, or genomic datasets
- Statistical modelling and inference skills
- Collaborative, collegial, organized working style
- Excellent communication and scientific writing skills in English
Desireable skills
- Strong programming skills (typically Python and/or R)
- Experience publishing in scientific journals and presenting at conferences
- Experience simulating data using SLiM (or similar tools)
- Interest in conservation biology and biodiversity protection
- Understanding of island biogeographic theory

Das Molekularlabor am Standort Müncheberg bietet mit modernsten Methoden und einer exzellenten Ausstattung einen zentralen Schwerpunkt für die Bearbeitung integrativ-taxonomischer Fragestellungen. Dank des insektenkundlichen Schwerpunkts ist es eine Anlaufstelle für nationale und internationale Forschende. Mit der Vergrößerung des Molekularlabors durch den 2027 bezugsfertigen Erweiterungsbau werden weitere spezialisierte Labore wie ein historisches DNA-, RNA- und Next Generation Sequencing Labor am Standort neu etabliert. Kernaufgabe ist es, die genetische und genomische Forschung am Standort zu gewährleisten, auszubauen und aktiv zur Biodiversitätsforschung beizutragen.

Ihre Aufgaben
- Vorbereitung, Durchführung und Dokumentation umfangreicher molekulargenetischer und genomischer Analysen
- Anwendung moderner Methoden wie bspw. Sanger-Sequenzierung, MinION-Sequenzierung und NextGeneration Sequencing
- Unterstützung bei der Auswertung genetischer und genomischer Daten in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Wissenschaftler*innen
- Technische Betreuung und Pflege der DNA- und Gewebesammlungen
- Sie organisieren gemeinsam mit dem Team die Abläufe des Molekularlabors und koordinieren die Labornutzung sowie die Verwaltung und Nachbestellung von Labormaterialien
- Sie unterstützen bei der Betreuung von universitären Abschlussarbeiten, Praktikant*innen und Gästen und arbeiten bei allgemeinen institutsbezogenen Aufgaben mit
Ihr Profil
- Abgeschlossene Ausbildung als biologisch-technische*r Assistent*in (m/w/d) oder ein Abschluss in einem vergleichbaren Bereich
- Praktische Erfahrung im Laborbereich
- Fundierte Kenntnisse unterschiedlicher molekulargenetischer/genomischer Analysemethoden (z.B. Sanger-Sequenzierung, MinION Sequenzierung, Next Generation Sequencing, usw.)
- Sicheren Umgang mit MS Office, DNA-Analysesoftware
- Bereitschaft, sich schnell in neue Softwarelösungen und technische Verfahren einzuarbeiten
- Selbständige, strukturierte und sorgfältige Arbeitsweise sowie Organisationsgeschick, Teamfähigkeit und Kommunikationsstärke
- Gute Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift
Wünschenswert sind
- Erfahrung im Umgang mit entomologischem Trocken- und Ethanolmaterial

Das wissenschaftliche Volontariat
Zweck des Volontärverhältnisses ist es, dem*der Volontär*in (m/w/d) durch eine qualifizierte Arbeit in einem Museum die Gelegenheit zur eigenen Aus-, Fort- oder Weiterbildung zu geben. Hierzu sollen im Rahmen des Volontariats eigene Aufgaben, die eine wissenschaftliche Vor- und Ausbildung voraussetzen, unter Anleitung durchgeführt werden, um Kenntnisse, Fähigkeiten und Erfahrungen für eine berufliche Tätigkeit in der Biodiversitätsforschung zu erwerben.
Ihre Aufgaben
Sammeln und Bewahren:
- Methoden zur Erfassung terrestrischer Mollusken, Aufbereitung und Dokumentation von zoologischen Sammlungs- und Ausstellungsobjekten (v.a. Malakologie und Mammalogie), Organisation und Pflege von Sammlungen
Dokumentieren und Forschen:
- Forschung zur Taxonomie, Systematik und Evolutionsbiologie terrestrischer Mollusken sowie zum Einfluss des Bibers auf die Biodiversität in Lebensräumen der Oberlausitz
Ausstellen und Vermitteln:
- Entwicklung von kreativen Ideen für digitale und analoge Vermittlungsformate im Museums- und Ausstellungsbereich
- Aktive Mitwirkung bei der Erstellung der inhaltlichen Konzeption besucherspezifischer Angebote
- Unterstützung der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit (u.a. bei der Organisation und Durchführung öffentlicher Veranstaltungen und Führungen sowie Mitarbeit an der Internetpräsenz)
Museumsmanagement:
- Mitwirkung im Verwaltungsmanagement und der Verwaltungsorganisation
- Beteiligung an Beschaffungsverfahren und Auftragsvergaben
- Beteiligung im Antragsmanagement im Hinblick auf die selbständige Beantragung von Drittmittelprojekten

Ihr Profil
- abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium (Diplom/Master) der Biologie oder ähnliche naturwissenschaftliche Ausbildung
- gute Grundlagenkenntnisse über die Prinzipien zoologischer Taxonomie und Systematik und Erfahrung im Umgang mit Bestimmungsliteratur

The Senckenberg German Entomological Institute (SDEI) is located in Müncheberg, a town famous for hosting state-of-the art research facilities in the Berlin metropolitan area.
About the Project This PhD position is part of a DFG-funded project which aims to clarify the classification of Neotropical net-winged beetles (Coleoptera: Lycidae) affected by paedomorphosis – a syndrome where adult individuals retain juvenile traits.
Using a large-scale phylogenomic approach combined with integrative morphological investigations, the project seeks to identify diagnostic traits that distinguish these lineages. We aim to determine the timing of their divergence and explore the evolutionary drivers behind their convergent morphologies within the framework of a biogeographical model.
The research associate will have the opportunity to work towards a PhD through the University of Potsdam, while being based at the Senckenberg German Entomological Institute (SDEI) in Müncheberg. The successful candidate will engage in diverse scientific activities spanning fieldwork, phylogenomics, museum-based research, biogeographic analyses, and bioinformatics.
Your tasks
- Plan and conduct field expeditions in the West Indies, including insect specimen collection using specialized tools and techniques (nets, Malaise, FIT, and light traps, sifting, etc.), and managing field logistics (travel planning, booking flights and hotels, renting cars).
- Perform morphological and molecular laboratory work on beetle specimens, as well as execute bioinformatic, phylogenomic, and biogeographic analyses
- Manage, curate, document, and analyse complex scientific datasets (e.g., genomic alignments) through the development and implementation of custom scripts and bioinformatics pipelines.
- Prepare and publish scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and at international conferences
- Collaborate closely with project partners on research objectives and joint publications
Your profile
- Completed Master’s degree in systematics, entomology, evolutionary biology, or a closely related field, coupled with a strong interest in insect evolution
- Excellent knowledge of insect evolution, phylogenetics, and/or beetle systematics, capable of identifying all major insect orders and common families
- The physical capability and willingness to conduct extensive fieldwork in the tropics, alongside general availability to travel internationally for museum visits, project collaborations, and conferences for up to four consecutive weeks, with an expected frequency of three to four times per year
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
- Strong communication and scientific writing skills in English
Desireable skills
- Experience with imaging systems such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography (microCT), and macrophotography, as well as the editing and processing of these generated images
- Experience with methods of divergence time estimation, ancestral range reconstruction, and trait evolution
- Prior experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals
- Knowledge of phylogenomic methods, including both computational assembly and wet-lab techniques

Our headquarter is located in the thriving commercial metropolis of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany, which also hosts one of our most famous facilities, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.
Your tasks
- Conduct innovative evolutionary and/or ecological research that makes use of the extensive herpetological collections
- Take advantage of a broad scope of methods (e.g. bioacoustics, molecular or genomic methods, modern imaging techniques, machine learning) to address questions of amphibian and/or reptile evolution, systematics and/or ecology (incl. conservation or disease ecology)
- Preserve, curate and develop the herpetological collection; guide the transformation of the collection into the digital era
- Publish scientific results in international scientific journals
- Acquire third-party funding to establish a herpetological working group
- Provide scientific guidance to technical staff and support to guests and young scientists in collections-based research
- Contribute to our vocational training of museum technicians
- Active participation in the SGN programs incl. dialogue with the general public
Your profile
- PhD in Biology or related field
- Internationally recognized scientific expertise with respect to current career level
- Species knowledge, taxonomic expertise and an understanding of evolutionary biology research in the field of herpetology
- Knowledge of modern herpetological research methods (e.g. bioacoustics, molecular methods, and/or modern imaging techniques, including X-ray diagnostics)
Desireable skills
- Experience in scientific work with and digital development of herpetological collections
- Experience and clear vision of attracting third-party funding
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; willingness to learn German is appreciated
- Experience in or willingness to lead a research and collections team
