A thorough understanding of the species is essential for this. Therefore, the researchers collect organisms and examine them morphologically in order to distinguish the species from one another with precision and classify them taxonomically.

The natural history collections constitute Senckenberg’s largest and most significant research infrastructure. With approximately 40 million specimens, they represent the largest natural history collection in Germany and are likely the sixth largest in the world.
